Everything worth knowing before you go.
Guangzhou is China's third-largest metropolitan area and the commercial capital of the Pearl River Delta — a city shaped by trade, pragmatism and its proximity to Hong Kong. The LGBTQ+ scene is centred in the Tianhe District (the modern business and shopping area) and has historically been more commerce-oriented and less community-organised than Shanghai or Chengdu. The city's long history of international trade contact and pragmatic business culture has created a relatively tolerant social environment, though the national restrictions of the post-2021 period apply here as everywhere.
