L'Elefante at Via Melzo 22 has been the anchor of Milan's gay scene since the late 1970s — nearly half a century of continuous operation on the street that became the axis of Porta Venezia's LGBTQ+ district. The bar is intimate by design: a long zinc counter, art-deco fixtures, soft lighting and walls covered in photos and memorabilia from decades of queer Milan. The crowd is a genuine cross-section of the neighbourhood: regulars from the 1980s alongside twenty-somethings who discovered it on Instagram. It is one of very few Italian gay bars where three or four generations share the same barstool. The music stays conversational in volume — this is a talking bar, not a dancing one. Thursday through Saturday evenings draw the largest crowds. It doubles as an informal community hub: flyers for queer events, benefit nights and political campaigns cover every surface.
