Es Cavallet is the gay and nudist beach of Ibiza — a long strip of pale sand at the southern end of the island, between the Salines salt lakes and the sea, backed by stone pines and bordered by the protected natural park that gives this part of Ibiza a character quite different from the developed resort beaches further north. The water is the clear, turquoise, Balearic variety that Ibiza's promotional images always show but that not all of the island's beaches actually deliver; at Es Cavallet it is genuine. The beach has been associated with the gay and nudist communities since the 1970s and has maintained that character with the consistency that comes from a genuinely established social convention: arriving at Es Cavallet in summer, you are arriving at a gay beach in the same way that arriving at Platja de la Bassa Rodona in Sitges is arriving at a gay beach. No signage is required. The La Playa beach bar and restaurant at the centre of the beach is the social hub of the Es Cavallet experience — a venue where the distinction between beach, bar, and restaurant dissolves in the characteristically Balearic way, where lunch becomes afternoon drinks and afternoon drinks become the beginning of the evening. The beach is accessible by taxi or bus from Ibiza Town; the journey takes approximately 20 minutes.
