Johannesburg Pride has been running since 1990, making it Africa's oldest pride event and one of the first on the continent. South Africa's post-apartheid constitution explicitly protects sexual orientation — the first in the world to do so — and the October pride event reflects that unique legal position. The parade through the northern suburbs draws tens of thousands and is surrounded by a week of parties and cultural events.
