Sydney's gay bar scene runs on two separate tracks. Oxford Street in Darlinghurst is the established strip, with venues ranging from sports bars to late-night dance bars. Newtown, four kilometres west, has a cheaper and more mixed queer pub scene. The two barely overlap in crowd or atmosphere.
Oxford Street
The Oxford Street strip is back in reasonable shape after a rough few years. The 2014 lockout laws — which forced venues to stop admitting new patrons after 1:30am — hit the area badly. Several bars closed. The laws were wound back and eventually repealed, and since then new venues have opened and some of the old regulars have stabilised.
The concentration of gay bars is mainly between Taylor Square and Flinders Street, roughly the Darlinghurst section of the street. Most are open from late afternoon through to around 3am on weekends. The busiest period is Friday and Saturday from 11pm onwards. Drinks run AUD 12-18 for a cocktail, similar to CBD prices.
During Mardi Gras, which falls in late February or early March, Oxford Street becomes a different animal. Bars are packed for weeks, the parade closes the street on the final Saturday, and the atmosphere is genuinely hard to replicate at any other time of year.
Newtown
Newtown's bars are cheaper and attract a younger, more mixed crowd. Women and non-binary people are better represented here than on Oxford Street. The venues are mostly general pubs that lean queer rather than dedicated gay bars, though the distinction matters less in practice than it sounds.
King Street is the main street. Several of the pubs have regular queer nights and drag shows. The area has a strong student and arts crowd from the University of Sydney nearby. It is a good option if Oxford Street feels too commercial or too heavily male-skewed.

Practical notes
Oxford Street venues are accessible from Museum or St James stations on the T4 line, or bus from the city. Newtown is on the Inner West Line from Central Station, about ten minutes by train. Both areas are walkable once you are there.
Cover charges apply at some venues on weekends and during Mardi Gras season. Most bars accept contactless payment. For the broader city picture, see the Gay Sydney Guide.
