The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras is Australia's most internationally famous LGBTQ+ event and one of the world's great pride celebrations. Since 1978, when a police confrontation with protesters sparked a civil rights movement, Mardi Gras has evolved into a three-week arts and culture festival culminating in the iconic Parade and Party.
The 2026 festival runs under the theme ECSTATICA from 13 February to 1 March, with the parade on 28 February along Oxford Street — Sydney's historic LGBTQ+ heart. Over 12,500 marchers in elaborate floats and costumes entertain 300,000 spectators lining the route. The official after-party at the Hordern Pavilion is legendary, featuring international DJs and performances until dawn.
Beyond the parade, Midsumma-style programming fills the three weeks with theatre, film, sport, art, and community events. Fair Day at Victoria Park draws 80,000+ people for a family-friendly afternoon of live music, food stalls and community organizations — it's the event's beating heart.
