Seksualiti Merdeka ('Sexual Freedom') is Malaysia's annual LGBTQ+ rights festival, held in Kuala Lumpur as a programme of arts, film, and discussions rather than a street parade — a format adapted to Malaysia's legal and social constraints. Its name is a direct riff on Malaysia's national independence ('Merdeka'), making a pointed argument that sexual freedom is as fundamental as political freedom. The festival has faced police bans but has found ways to persist, representing the courageous heart of Malaysian queer activism.
