Apollo Sauna has been operating in the Schöneberg/Tiergarten border area near the Kurfürstendamm for over 40 years, making it one of Berlin's most historically established gay sauna venues. The location in Kurfürstenstraße — a few minutes from KaDeWe and the Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn — positions it in the western part of Berlin's traditional gay area. The facilities are traditional rather than modern: steam room, dry sauna, darkrooms, rest area and locker facilities. The Apollo is not the city's largest or most modern sauna, but it serves a consistent clientele of local gay men who prefer its character and neighbourhood to the larger, more tourist-oriented Kreuzberg venues. The weekday afternoon and evening operation draws a more relaxed, socially oriented crowd than the post-club rush at Steamworks. For visitors staying in the western part of Berlin and wanting a sauna experience within the historic gay district, Apollo is the local option.
