Coming Out opened in 2001 at number 8 Via di San Giovanni in Laterano and became the anchor around which Gay Street coalesced. The position is extraordinary: the bar's terrace faces the Colosseum at a distance of roughly 150 metres, and the evening crowd spills onto the cobblestones with the ancient monument lit up behind them. This is Rome's most visitor-facing gay bar — the unofficial welcome desk for every LGBTQ+ tourist arriving in the city. By day it operates as a relaxed café-bar; by late afternoon the cocktail service begins; evenings bring karaoke Tuesdays and drag shows on Sundays. The clientele is international, tourist-heavy and deliberately welcoming to newcomers. The B&B 1st Floor, a gay-owned boutique accommodation, occupies the floors directly above the bar, making it possible to wake up on Gay Street without leaving the building.
