Taormina is Sicily's most glamorous LGBTQ+ destination — a hilltop town of 11,000 permanent residents that transforms into one of Italy's most sought-after upscale gay travel destinations each summer. The ancient Greek theatre frames Etna. The clifftop streets and boutique hotels have welcomed gay visitors since at least the early 20th century, when Taormina was a stop on the Grand Tour for European gay men (D.H. Lawrence, Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote all spent time here). The Isola Bella / Mazzaro beach below has a known gay-friendly stretch. The scene is almost entirely concentrated in June–September; winter Taormina is quiet.
