Bar Giancarlo is one of Turin's older surviving gay bars — a low-key neighbourhood place near the Accademia delle Belle Arti that has been serving the local gay community since the 1990s. The bar is not large and not fashionable: it has the comfortable shabbiness of a venue that has outlasted several rounds of trend cycles and is now simply part of the neighbourhood's fabric. The crowd is older and very local — regulars who have been coming for years — and the atmosphere is that of a genuinely community bar rather than a scene venue. Good for a quiet aperitivo or an early evening drink before moving to more active venues. The proximity to the Fine Arts Academy gives the bar a mild arty inflection.
