Rotterdam Pride is the Netherlands' second-largest pride event — a celebration that combines a canal parade on the Rotte river with a street festival in the city centre, set against the extraordinary backdrop of Rotterdam's modernist architecture. The event takes place in September, positioning it as the natural follow-on to Amsterdam's August Canal Parade for visitors making the short 40-minute train journey between the two cities. Rotterdam Pride's character is more locally oriented and less tourist-dominated than Amsterdam's event — the city's own LGBTQ+ community is more visibly at the centre of the celebration. The canal parade uses Rotterdam's urban waterways as its route, with decorated boats carrying community groups and organisations past the city's regenerated waterfront. The street festival concentrates in the Witte de Withstraat cultural quarter, incorporating the city's existing gallery and bar culture into the Pride programme. Rotterdam's specific architectural context — the Erasmus Bridge lit at night, the Cube Houses in the background, the Markthal as a festival venue — gives Rotterdam Pride a visual identity that is entirely its own.
