Key West's cruising scene is shaped by the island's physical character. It is small, warm, and has a strong culture of clothing-optional spaces. The primary social and cruising scene runs through the guesthouse pools rather than through a formal network of sex clubs or outdoor cruising areas in the style of a larger city.

Clothing-optional guesthouse pools

Several gay guesthouses in Old Town have clothing-optional pool areas that function as the main daytime social scene. The pools are where men meet, talk, and cruise in the most Key West way — relaxed, outdoors, in the sun. Some of these properties are quite small with pools that fit ten or fifteen people. Others are larger operations with terraces, bars, and proper lounging areas. The atmosphere varies by property but the general character is social rather than anonymous.

Some pools are exclusively for guests. Others sell day passes. Check with individual properties ahead of time if you want to use a specific pool without staying there.

Smathers Beach

Smathers Beach is Key West's main public beach on the Atlantic side of the island. It is a standard public beach with a casual gay-friendly section toward the eastern end. It is not a formal cruising area, but it draws a gay crowd and the relaxed atmosphere of the beach means it functions as a social space. Clothing is required on the beach itself. The area is open and public.

Higgs Beach area

Higgs Beach, on the south side of the island, is another public beach with a gay-friendly reputation. The park area adjacent to the beach has historically been a gathering spot. The atmosphere is relaxed and daytime-oriented. The beach park facilities include a pier and some recreational areas.

Practical notes

Key West's outdoor spaces are genuinely outdoor — sun, heat, and sand are part of the picture. Sun protection matters even when you are not planning to be out long. The island is small enough that most locations are reachable by bicycle or on foot from Old Town.
