Gay retail in San Francisco is split between the Castro's neighbourhood shops and gift stores and the Folsom Street leather and gear specialists in SoMa. The city has a long history with both, and several of the shops that are still operating have been doing so for decades.

The Castro

Cliff's Variety on Castro Street is a Castro institution. It is a proper hardware and general store that has been there since 1936. The gay community adopted it decades ago and it remains a neighbourhood fixture. It sells the kind of stuff you actually need: light bulbs, paint, tools, alongside an eccentric selection of gifts and novelties. Worth visiting just to see it.

The Castro retail strip has the expected mix of gift shops, card shops, clothing and the kind of souvenirs that mark any established gay neighbourhood. Several shops carry pride merchandise year-round. A few carry books, art, and community-oriented goods.

A Different Light Bookstore, which was a Castro institution for decades, closed in 2011 after 31 years. It was one of the country's most important LGBTQ+ bookshops. No direct replacement has taken its place, though other local bookshops carry LGBTQ+ sections.

SoMa leather and fetish

The Folsom Street area has shops that have been serving the leather and fetish community since the 1970s. Mr. S Leather on Seventh Street is one of the most well-known leather and fetish gear shops in the world. It carries a serious range: leatherwork, harnesses, restraints, rubber, electro, and everything adjacent. The staff know their products. If you are shopping for gear rather than souvenirs, this is the place.

Other fetish and adult shops are scattered through SoMa, several within walking distance of the main bar strip on Folsom. Stock ranges from mainstream adult retail to specialist fetish gear.

Practical notes

Castro shops generally run daytime hours, 10am to 7 or 8pm. SoMa shops and adult stores tend to run later. Check before making a special trip. Some of the smaller gift and novelty shops in the Castro keep irregular hours.
