Bar 501 sits at 501 Church Street in the heart of the Village and distinguishes itself from its neighbours primarily through its excellent street-level patio and its resolutely casual atmosphere. While other Church Street venues go for high energy, themed nights, and show production values, Bar 501 is a comfortable neighbourhood bar — the kind of place where you can have a drink without navigating a cover charge or shouting over a DJ. The patio is one of the better Church Street terraces: directly onto the sidewalk, good for watching the Village go by, and busy from spring through fall. Inside is unpretentious — pool table, bar seating, a small dance area. The crowd is mixed in age and type, leaning toward the regulars-who-know-each-other end of the spectrum. For visitors staying in the Village, Bar 501 is the natural first stop of an evening before moving to higher-energy venues, or the comfortable last stop for a nightcap.
