The Dinah Shore Weekend — universally known simply as The Dinah — is the world's largest lesbian event, held in Palm Springs each April since 1991. The event draws approximately 15,000 women for a long weekend of concerts, pool parties, comedy shows, a golf tournament (a nod to the original Dinah Shore LPGA golf tournament that drew lesbian fans to Palm Springs in the 1970s and 1980s), and the social gathering of the international lesbian community. The Dinah was founded by Mariah Hanson and has been a constant presence on the lesbian travel calendar for 35 years; it predates the mainstream visibility of lesbian travel culture and helped establish Palm Springs as the desert destination for queer women. The programming has evolved significantly over the decades — the concert lineup now features major pop and hip-hop artists with strong queer female followings, and the pool parties at the main hotels are central to the event's identity. For lesbian visitors, The Dinah is the most important travel date on the calendar, combining the best of the circuit party format with the specific pleasures of Palm Springs's desert resort culture.
