The Arizona Gay Rodeo is one of the most distinctive and entertaining LGBTQ+ events in the American West — a full rodeo competition held under the auspices of the International Gay Rodeo Association, featuring traditional rodeo events (bull riding, barrel racing, calf roping) alongside campy specialty events unique to the gay rodeo circuit. The Arizona event is held in March in the Phoenix valley, taking advantage of the comfortable spring temperatures before the summer heat arrives. The gay rodeo circuit has roots in the American West going back to the 1970s, when it emerged as a community institution serving rural LGBTQ+ people who had grown up in ranching and rodeo culture and found in the gay rodeo a way to honour that background within an affirming community context. The Arizona Gay Rodeo draws competitors and spectators from across the Southwest and from the broader gay rodeo circuit — enthusiasts who travel the national schedule from event to event. For visitors who have never seen a gay rodeo, the combination of genuine athletic competition, community warmth, and strategic camp is an experience that has no equivalent in urban gay culture.
