Café de la Mer is the undisputed social centre of the Montpellier gay scene. Perched on Place du Marché aux Fleurs, a small square in the heart of the historic centre, its large terrace fills from mid-morning with students, locals and visitors enjoying coffee, wine and conversation in the Mediterranean sunshine. Inside is darker and more intimate, with a good cocktail list and a friendly, young staff. This is the bar where the city's queer community gravitates after work and before clubbing. On Pride weekend it is the essential starting point for every gathering.

My wife and I were visiting Montpellier and learned of a group of Americans who gathered at Café de la Mer every Thursday morning. We joined them. The staff at Café de la Mer was very friendly and served the large group efficiently. This was a morning meeting, so most orders were coffee and croissants. The coffee and croissants were good, but I wouldn't say they were better than what you find at most French sidewalk cafés. We sat outside. It was very pleasant, but cool (early April).
Great bar for Happy Hour(s) drinks & people watching, worth a stop. Front of house staff 10/10. Till next time 🍺🍺🍺🇫🇷😍
Very old bar that I know since my youthful time in Montpellier. They have an eclectic clientele that suits well my taste for people from all walk of life . I certainly like the room inside with plenty of sitting space for winter or rainy days. The terrasse is just wonderful
We asked for two glasses of wine and some water. The water was pretty needed on a hot evening. The server was extremely rude, took our order abruptly, and then 'forgot' our water. We had to chase him for it and he was no friendlier the second time. Si on résume en français, un accueil de merde, un serveur de merde, rien à ajouter !
Lovely place for a beverage or light repast, and home to and expat meetup every Thursday morning
