Boystown
Boystown is Chicago's main gay neighborhood. It's in Lakeview, along North Halsted Street. Rainbow pylons on Halsted, between Belmont and Addison, have marked the strip since 1997. Dozens of bars, restaurants, and gay-oriented businesses are all within walking distance here. It's one of the densest gay scenes in any American city.
The strip is very walkable. Most of the action is on Halsted and the surrounding blocks. Get there easily: take the CTA Brown or Red line to Belmont, and you're in the middle of it. No car needed. The neighborhood stays busy on weekends from afternoon onwards, with a mix of tourists and regulars.
Boystown has everything. Leather bars, dance clubs, dive bars, sports bars, and neighborhood pubs are all a few minutes' walk from each other. That variety is the point. You can start the night at a quiet bar, move to a dance floor, and end up somewhere completely different without a cab.
Andersonville
Andersonville is further north on Clark Street, about twenty minutes on the Red line from Boystown at Berwyn station. It's a different kind of neighborhood. Historically tied to Chicago's lesbian community, it's calmer, more residential than Boystown. Think coffee shops and restaurants, not clubs. Bookstores, local boutiques—it feels lived-in, not oriented toward nightlife.
Andersonville has changed over the years, like many historically lesbian neighborhoods. The character is still there, but it's less exclusively so. It's worth the trip if you want a counterpoint to Boystown's energy or you're staying in the city's north.
IML
International Mr. Leather happens on Memorial Day weekend, at the end of May. It's one of the world's largest leather events, bringing over 20,000 people to Chicago. The contest is the centerpiece, but surrounding events, parties, and a vendor market that takes over the host hotel fill the entire weekend. If leather is your scene, plan a trip around this. Accommodation books out months ahead.
Chicago Pride
Chicago Pride runs in late June. The parade goes through Boystown and draws huge crowds—it's regularly one of the largest Pride celebrations in the Midwest. The route ends near Montrose, where the afterparty goes on for hours. It's a major event, and the city treats it seriously.
