Vienna's gay bar scene does not cluster into a single strip the way Berlin's Schoneberg or Amsterdam's Reguliersdwarsstraat do. What you get instead is a spread of venues across the 6th and 7th districts, with some outliers elsewhere in the city. This requires a bit more navigation than a dedicated gay street, but it also means different bars have different characters rather than all competing for the same foot traffic.

The 6th district: Mariahilf

Mariahilf has the densest concentration of gay venues and is the starting point for most nights out. The Naschmarkt area anchors the neighbourhood and the bars radiate from there. Some are old-school Viennese cafe-bar style: comfortable, not loud, places where people linger. Others are more nightlife-oriented with DJs from midnight onwards.

The Eagle Vienna is the main leather and cruise bar. It has a local regular crowd and a particular atmosphere that is more interested in the scene than in being welcoming to first-timers who wander in. That is not unwelcoming exactly, just focused. Mango Bar is similarly on the cruise end of things.

The 7th district: Neubau

Neubau sits adjacent to Mariahilf and has a younger, more design-conscious character. Some bars here are gay-friendly rather than specifically gay — mixed crowds, no particular scene identity. Worth exploring if you want to move beyond the core area.

Cafe Berg (Alsergrund)

Cafe Berg on Berggasse in the 9th district is the kind of place that has been there long enough to be an institution. It is a gay cafe with a bookshop attached, and it pulls a different crowd from the Mariahilf bars: intellectual, neighbourhood-regular, less nightlife-oriented. Good for daytime or early evening. The book selection is genuinely good if you read German or want English LGBTQ+ titles.

Types of venue

Vienna's gay bars split roughly into: cafe-bars (comfortable, non-loud, open during the day), leather and cruise bars (Eagle Vienna, Mango Bar), and club-bars (that function as nightclubs from late evening). The city does not have a big commercial dance club culture on the scale of Berlin, but there are options on weekend nights.

The bars

    • Café Museum — Smart cafe with replicas of original Adolf Loos decor, a former hangout for Klimt, Schiele & others.
    • Cafe Rifugio — Cafe Rifugio is a small gay bar & café in the heart of gay Vienna. They have daily happy hours from 3pm-8pm, offering special-priced drink of the day.
    • Cafe Rudiger — Cafe Rudiger is a gay ‘hustler’ bar which leaves little to the imagination.
    • Cafe-Bar CHERI — CHERI is a small gay bar & cafe in the gay district of Vienna which mostly attracts the locals.
    • City Bar Vienna — The new stylish and modern gay bar in the heart of Vienna, offers its guests a pleasant atmosphere, delicious cocktails, good music and select specials. A place where all can come together and enjoy their evening. Gay bar...yes!...but we are also 100% straight friendly! :)
    • Club Auslage — BAR / CLUB / EXHIBITION. You ca expect emerging artists, a great sound system and fair prices in the gem of the Viennese club culture.
    • Club U — Dance Club hosting varies parties.
    • DUAL CLUB — The owners of the well known bar WIRR in Viennas 7th district decided to rename their small underground club. In close collaboration with graphic design studio Valence and Zirup architects we developed a permanent projection mapping installation as the key visual element for the club. Based on the new name “Dual” and the logo designed by Valence we created the mapping objects with Zirup. The new name “Dual” is reflected in multiple ways. Two mapping objects are mounted behind the DJ
    • Eagle Bar Vienna — Drink in the front, Play in the Back.
    • Felixx — At the Felixx their focus is on great ambience with excellent wines, a choice of cocktails, small snacks and heart stopping service!
    • Flex — Flex night club with a variety of different beats.
    • Goldener Spiegel — Goldener Spiegel is an elegantly decorated bar and restaurant that serves high quality vegetarian and Viennese food. It is located close to Vienna's gay scene and is a popular gay hangout for dining, drinking and cruising. The place is closed
    • HARD ON
    • Hardon — At Hard On the men of LMC comes to meet and play. Bring your leather and toys for some hot fun.
    • Imperial Madness — In this fast moving world of ours with the mixing and clashing of different styles arouse most and for all the need for individuality and – at the same time – for “good old values” a long way off stereotyped thinking.
    • Inside Bar — Inside Bar is a small gay bar near Naschmarkt for mixed ages.
    • Kaiserbruendl Herrensauna — definitely recommended. Went at around 5pm and stayed for two hours. Easy to get lost, but that is a lot of the fun. Good atmosphere and what surprised me the most, given that it was middle of the week, early evening, is that it was very busy. All ages, but mainly younger.
    • Le Swing — nice club... friendly.. accomodating on a monday night eventhough am a transvestite...
    • Mango Bar — The boys is young and ready to party. Located in the middle of Vienna'a gay district.
    • Marea Alta — Interesting bar to go to! They have a downstairs club on the weekends! Small and intimate , somehow for lesbian crowds but not only ! Very friendly staff ! Great for hanging out and chillin !

Practical notes

Vienna nightlife starts later than northern European cities. Bars begin filling after 10pm. Weekends are busier; midweek has a different, smaller crowd. Prices are moderate — cheaper than London or Zurich, more expensive than Prague or Budapest. Cash is useful; not all bars take cards.
